Flora Graeca is one of those scarves collected as much for the story it tells as for what it shows. It is signed by Niki Goulandris — a Greek botanical painter and illustrator, known for her scientific plant illustrations and for founding the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in Athens with her husband. Hermès entrusted her with this design, first issued in 1983: a herbarium of ancient Greek flowers, presented by the house as the travel journal of Homer and Pindar, from Crete to Mount Olympus.
The design conveys all its precision. The flowers are treated like herbarium plates — graduated petals, detailed stamens, veins drawn one by one — and each species is named in Latin in ribbon cartouches running through the composition: Paeonia mascula, Helleborus niger, Fritillaria graeca, Campanula incurva. It is a scholarly scarf, but never austere: scientific precision serves the beauty of the pattern, never the other way around.
This version comes in a particularly luminous yellow colourway: a cream background featuring powder pinks, mauves, corals and ochres, set against olive green and khaki foliage, all framed by a wide mustard border highlighted with an olive pinstripe. A warm, sunlit palette, easy to wear with white, camel, khaki or denim. The silk twill gives the scarf its sheen and drape, while the edges are hand-rolled — the rolled and needle-stitched finish that creates the characteristic raised edge of the house's scarves.
