Gianni Versace did not choose Medusa by chance. As a child, he played among the Greco-Roman ruins of Calabria, and it was there that he was drawn to this face from mythology: that of a figure from whom one cannot look away, at the risk of being petrified. The house made it its emblem in 1978 — not a monogram, not initials, but an image. It needs no name: you recognise it, and you know.
These earrings bring together the house's two visual signatures. At the centre is the raised Medusa head, with its snake hair and frontal gaze. All around it is the Greek key — this ancient right-angled frieze, borrowed from classical architecture, which Versace has used on its fabrics and jewellery alike for as long as anyone can remember. One does not go without the other: the image and the frame, the figure and the ornament.
The silver-tone metal enhances the design: it brings out the relief without the gold, more commonly associated with the house, making the piece paradoxically easier to wear every day. At 2 cm in diameter, the medallion is the right size — compact enough not to feel heavy, yet present enough to stand out. The setting is clip-on: no pierced ears required, and the weight remains reasonable for this size.
