Moroccan Berber rugs showcase the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship. They are woven on traditional wooden looms in Morocco’s mountainous regions (the High Atlas or Middle Atlas, depending on the type of rug) by Berber women working at home or together in cooperatives in remote mountain villages.

All Berber rugs are made from sheep’s wool and hand-knotted. Making a Berber rug takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on its size and the complexity of its patterns.

Contemporary Berber kilims are woven in Morocco’s High Atlas. The weaving technique used for these rugs is very old and highly complex: they are the only flat-woven rugs made with knotted wool. The women who have mastered these complex techniques do not use a traditional loom. The result is a very dense, 100% wool rug that is particularly light and hard-wearing.

One distinctive feature of kilims and their flat weave is that they have no pile, unlike a high-pile wool rug, making them very easy to care for. That is why they are often placed beneath a dining table, for example, but a Berber kilim rug will also find a place in any room of your home.
