Description & history

Palm trees, exotic florals and fans in warm, earthy tones — “Tropical” is an Hermès scarf that you would want to frame as much as wear, a dense and luminous botanical composition by Laurence Bourthoumieux.

The Hermès scarf is one of the most documented and collected fashion objects in the world — not because it is a luxury scarf, but because it is a work printed on silk. Since 1937, each model has been entrusted to an artist, drawn by hand, engraved on screen and produced in a limited series with a precision that only belongs to the house on Faubourg Saint-Honoré. “Tropical”, by Laurence Bourthoumieux — an illustrator recognized for her precise botanical compositions — is part of this tradition: a scene of imaginary islands constructed with palm trees, exotic florals and fan motifs, in a palette of warm and earthy tones which give the square a soft and constant light, far from the saturated versions that we sometimes associate with the tropical genre.

Silk — 100% — and hand-rolled edges are the two technical markers of the authentic Hermès scarf. The 90 × 90 cm format is the house standard: large enough to drape the shoulders in a light stole, tie a generous volume at the neck, or hang on a Birkin or Kelly bag handle for an immediately recognizable effect. It can also simply be framed - which many collectors do with the most successful models.

In good vintage condition, with no stains or holes, rolled edges intact and the print retaining all its vibrancy. Sold with its original Hermès box – a complete, signed “Tropical”, ready to join a collection or a wardrobe that knows what it's looking for.
