Moroccan Berber rugs showcase the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship. They are woven on traditional wooden looms in Morocco’s mountainous regions (the High Atlas or Middle Atlas, depending on the type of rug) by Berber women working at home or together in cooperatives in remote mountain villages.

All Berber rugs are made from sheep’s wool and hand-knotted. Making a Berber rug takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on its size and the complexity of its patterns.

Azilal Berber rugs are made in the region around the town of the same name in the High Atlas. Traditionally decorated with a variety of monochrome patterns, today they feature a wealth of brightly coloured, sometimes fluorescent motifs against an ecru background. Azilal rugs have a less dense weave than Beni Ouarain rugs, for example, and are sometimes woven with a cotton weft, which can also be seen in the fringes. They are slightly thinner and more flexible than traditional Beni Ouarain rugs.
