Moroccan Berber rugs showcase the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship. They are woven on traditional wooden looms in Morocco’s mountainous regions (the High Atlas or Middle Atlas, depending on the type of rug) by Berber women working at home or together in cooperatives in remote mountain villages.

All Berber rugs are made from sheep’s wool and hand-knotted. Making a Berber rug takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on its size and the complexity of its patterns.

Boujaad Berber rugs were originally woven by a Berber tribe from the town of Boujaad in Morocco’s High Atlas. Boujaad rugs are made from 100% wool on traditional looms. These authentic rugs have patterns and colours reminiscent of vintage rugs. Their authenticity also comes from their rural origins: they are more rustic than their Beni Ouarain cousins. Their widely varied colours are sometimes deliberately faded and distressed to give them a patina reminiscent of antique rugs. Yet these are new rugs, recognisable by their designs: a subtle blend of faded blocks of colour and traditional Berber symbols and drawings. Boujaad rugs are like a dictionary of Berber symbols and patterns, easily recognisable from one rug to the next. Their designs spring from the imagination of the women who weave them and are steeped in a centuries-old craft and cultural tradition. Today, Boujaad rugs can be considered among the most creative, thanks to both their extensive colour palette and the complexity of their patterns.
